Brooklyn Public Library's
installation series, "Dwellings," continues with
Justin Lowe's "Passage." On view is a work that
was recently shown at the P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center in
Long Island City. Alluding to a building's foundation, the
installation is a play on the "design on a dime" home improvement aesthetic, which seeks to recontextualize
and transform the look and use of everyday materials. The
piece is constructed from the artist's collection of paperback
books, which he obtained from several libraries over a period
of a year and a half. In Lowe's piece, the colored edges of
the paperback books, normally hidden, are displayed to create
a parquet floor. Visitors to the library are encouraged to
walk and sit on the platform.
